Forge de Laguiole Tradition 12 cm Amourette

This 12 cm forged bee Laguiole folding knife is handmade in the village of Laguiole and has a forged bee and T12 steel blade. The traditional shepherd's cross is also featured on most models (check photos). Each has been crafted with pride by a single master cutler, ensuring that each masterpiece is unique to its craftsman's work ethic!

The Forge de Laguiole workshop operates in the tiny village of Laguiole, France - Pop. 1300 - where the famous knife first appeared in the early 1800s. Today, Forge de Laguiole represents the pinnacle of quality in the Laguiole cutlery business. Their reputation for integrity, ethics, and innovative designs has made this small 100 employees company the "Must Have" Laguiole luxury brand.

What is a Forged Bee? You can recognize a forged bee by looking below it, where it meets the decorated spring. If you do not see any gaps, it's a good sign that the bee and spring were forged from the same piece of metal. You can also recognize a soldered bee by noticing a straight gap/ridge where the bee meets the spring.

A 12 cm Laguiole folding knife can be used as a steak knife; its open length is 8. 3/4" vs. ~9" for a standard steak knife. Why use such a knife at the dinner table or at your favorite steak house? Check out our article (new tab) for the surprising answer.

You can recognize a forged bee when you look just below it, where it meets the decorated spring. If you do not see any gaps, it's a good sign that the bee and spring are forged from the same piece of metal. You can also recognize a soldered bee by noticing a straight gap/ridge where the bee meets the spring.

Many Laguiole pocket knives from most manufacturers, including Forge de Laguiole (7 cm knives), offer "soldered bees" models. Most Laguiole knives found on the market are solder bee models. Adding the bee to the spring by soldering saves time and money; this is why the cost of soldered bee knives can be substantially less. The original Laguiole knives had forged bees.

Snakewood aka Amourette (Brosimum guianense) is a gorgeous wood that originates mostly from Brazil's Suriname valley.
The part sold as snakewood is really the heartwood of the much larger tree. This wood is usually felled with axes and carried on the backs of natives over streams and through jungle areas.
Each tree felled is monitored, the Brazilian government has developed a strict permit process to control harvesting. The name was inspired by the snakeskin-like markings that decorate this exotic wood.
Initially deep red in color, snakewood changes color upon being exposed to air, making the wood eventually turn reddish-brown, as you see it today.
