The Corsican L' Antò Sculpted Handle by Gilles® Fontenille Pataud is a soulful homage to the traditional knives of the Isle of Beauty. Designed in collaboration with Corsican blacksmith Antoine Zuria, this model blends Mediterranean heritage with modern precision engineering. Handcrafted in Thiers—the historic heart of French cutlery—each knife is meticulously created from start to finish by a single master artisan. Proudly 100% Made in France.
Handle Character: This model features scales of genuine Amourette (Snakewood). Often called the most beautiful wood in the world, Amourette is prized for its extreme density and characteristic dark patterns that resemble a serpent's skin. The sculpted handle highlights the high natural luster and reddish-brown palette of this luxury material. The knife pictured is the exact one you will receive.
Lock-Top Mechanism: The Lock-Top system is designed for both security and comfort. The mechanism is slightly curved to feel ergonomic under the thumb, while the intricate file work on each side provides a confident, tactile grip. To unlock the blade, we recommend simply sliding your thumbnail under the gap for the most efficient and safe operation. Inside the handle, Teflon washers ensure a silky-smooth deployment, while a hardened blade stop protects the edge from ever touching the internal spring.
Hand-Chiseled Artistry: A hallmark of the Gilles® collection, each knife features a hand-filed spring top. This intricate decorative work is performed by a master cutler using traditional files, ensuring that no two knives are exactly alike. This elevated detail distinguishes the L' Antò as a professional-grade artifact rather than a mass-produced tool.

Snakewood aka Amourette (Brosimum guianense) is a gorgeous wood that originates mostly from Brazil's Suriname valley.
The part sold as snakewood is really the heartwood of the much larger tree. This wood is usually felled with axes and carried on the backs of natives over streams and through jungle areas.
Each tree felled is monitored, the Brazilian government has developed a strict permit process to control harvesting. The name was inspired by the snakeskin-like markings that decorate this exotic wood.
Initially deep red in color, snakewood changes color upon being exposed to air, making the wood eventually turn reddish-brown, as you see it today.
