Essential Maintenance for French Pocket Knives
Proper care ensures your authentic French folding knife—whether a classic Laguiole or another regional style—will last for generations. Follow these fundamental maintenance guidelines to preserve both its beauty and functionality.
Proper Closing Technique
Unlike modern locking knives, traditional French slip-joint pocket knives require a gentle touch. Even if your knife features a built-in blade stop (poncetage), you must never let the blade snap shut. To ensure safety and prevent the edge from striking the backspring, always carefully guide the blade closed by hand.
Handle Care
- Wooden Handles: Natural wood develops a beautiful patina over time. You may leave it as-is to age gracefully or occasionally apply a light coat of linseed oil to nourish and protect the wood grain.
- Organic "Animalia" Handles: Materials such as genuine horn tip, stag, and bone are naturally resilient and do not require oiling. The most important rule is to keep these materials dry and avoid exposure to extreme heat or prolonged moisture, which can cause warping.
Mechanism & Lubrication
To ensure a smooth, efficient action and protect the pivot from wear, regularly apply a drop or two of high-quality lubricant to the axle. We highly recommend using Tuf-Glide Oil-Free lubricant for all small moving components, as it protects without attracting dust or pocket lint.
Basic Sharpening
To maintain a factory-sharp edge, we recommend using a natural French sharpening stone. Pre-soak the whetstone in water for about 10 minutes, then carefully slide the blade along the stone while maintaining a consistent 20-degree angle on each side.
