The Laguiole XS 9 cm represents the ultimate expression of the "Gentleman’s knife"—compact, sophisticated, and engineered for those who appreciate discreet luxury. This small and elegantly designed pen knife features a precision lock-back mechanism that ensures the blade locks securely when in use. A Fontenille Pataud masterpiece, it features hand-guilloché detailing along the entire spring and a traditionally forged bee, markers of a knife crafted with absolute precision by a single master artisan.
Individual Photography: Because end grain wood reveals the internal growth rings and complex cellular structure of the burl, the visual pattern is incredibly intricate and impossible to replicate. We provide high-resolution photography for each piece; the knife pictured is the exact one you will receive. This ensures that the specific mosaic-like grain and organic detailing you select are exactly what will arrive for your collection.
Handle Character: This model is adorned with genuine Burled Beech End Grain scales. Unlike traditional side-grain cuts, the "end grain" orientation slices across the tree's growth rings, showcasing a stunning, porous "honeycomb" or "stippled" aesthetic. The natural burling of the Beech wood further complicates this pattern with erratic swirls and clusters of tiny eyes. This orientation is highly prized for its exceptional compressive strength and its ability to display the raw, hypnotic architectural heart of the timber. The result is a handle with immense visual depth and a uniquely warm, organic texture.
At 9 cm (closed), this knife is designed to sit comfortably and unnoticed in a pocket until needed. Each piece is a unique specimen of natural history, expertly shaped and polished in Thiers—Europe’s historic cradle of fine cutlery.

Stabilized burled beech "End-Grain" or "Bois Debout" in French harvested in France. End grain is the grain of wood seen when it is cut across the growth rings. Rather than cutting a plank of wood the trunk's length, end grain wood is actually cut at a 90-degree angle to the grain. This type of cut exposes the character of the wood rings and graining.

What is a Forged Bee? You can recognize a forged bee when you look just below it, where it meets the decorated spring. If you do not see any gaps, it's a good sign that the bee and spring were forged from the same piece of metal. You can also recognize a soldered bee by noticing a straight gap/ridge where the bee meets the spring.
Most inexpensive Laguiole pocket knives found on the market have a soldered bee. The process of adding the bee to the spring by soldering it saves time and money, this is why the cost of soldered bee knives can be substantially less. The original Laguiole knives had forged bees.
