The name "Laguiole" is free for anyone to use on cutlery, and items bearing that name can be manufactured anywhere in the world. As of 2024, there are still no regulations associated with Laguiole cutlery.
The Dilemma of "Made in France"
Current legislation allows a product to be labeled "Made in France" as long as 45% of the added value comes from French territory. Crucially, the packaging—such as an attractive wooden box—is included in this "added value" calculation.
This means a manufacturer could have 55% of a knife's parts made in India, Pakistan, or China, but by using a French-made box, they can legally label the final product "Made in France." Laguiole Imports does not work with any manufacturer that takes advantage of this loophole.
Important Facts
Except for specific exotic wood handles (such as ebony or rosewood), our featured partners—Forge de Laguiole, Fontenille Pataud, Laguiole Village, and Chateau Laguiole—do not outsource pocket knife production outside of France. While high-quality 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel is imported from Sweden, the craftsmanship remains strictly French.
It is important to remember that Laguiole is a village, not a brand. Because the name was never registered, it remains in the public domain. You can learn more about this in our detailed history of Laguiole.
