"LAGUIOLE" It's probably not what you think.

The Truth About Laguiole Origins: Made in France?

Laguiole knives are not only made in France

Since the name "Laguiole" was never registered as a trademark for cutlery, it remains in the French public domain. While several reputable manufacturers are actively lobbying to create a single appellation d'origine contrôlée, the current reality is quite different.

As of 2026, anyone can use the name "Laguiole" on cutlery items, regardless of whether they are made in France or follow the traditional design. Consequently, many inexpensive "Laguiole style" knives found in big-box stores are typically not manufactured in France, despite the name.

Most French-made Laguiole knives are not made in the village of Laguiole

The city of Thiers and its surrounding towns are the historical heart of French cutlery production. For many decades, nearly all Laguiole knives were produced in Thiers rather than the village of Laguiole itself.

Thiers cutlery effectively rescued the Laguiole knife by maintaining manufacturing through the early 20th century. Without their expertise, this elegant style might have vanished. It wasn't until 1987 that large-scale manufacturing returned to its birthplace via Forge de Laguiole.

Some "Made in France" knives are only partially French

Current legislation allows a product to be labeled "Made in France" as long as 45% of its added value is created on French territory. This "added value" often includes the packaging. If an inexpensive set of knives comes in an attractive wooden box made in France, the value of that box can legally contribute to the "Made in France" claim for the subpar cutlery inside.

While some manufacturers exploit these loopholes by importing components, most French cutlers remain ethical, producing genuine, high-quality tools.

Note: Laguiole Imports partners exclusively with manufacturers that produce 100% of their knives in France. Brands like Forge de Laguiole®Chateau Laguiole®and Fontenille Pataud® are entirely French-made.
